It is a mystery why this book is so good. It is about nothing much happening to ordinary people. But that is also precisely why it is good. It shows the joy of a traditional family holiday in the 30s from a family who have little money, and have to save all year for their annual treat. I read the first half in my tent on a campsite in the mountains, which certainly put me in the mood. But it wasn't just that, this is a feel-good novel written before the concept was invented. The characters are good people, but without being sanctimonious. I was reminded of The Darling Buds of May in parts, there is the same happy delight in everyday activities. Remarkably, the whole first third of the book is the journey there by train. You would think that would be boring, but quite the opposite. An amazing book.
