Arazan's Wolves
by John Flanagan
I am very disappointed. This plot had potential to be super cool, you have Will returning to Celtica, you have Maddie who’s parents traveled with Will in Celtica, and then there’s a seer who connects Maddie to all of that but that doesn’t really go further than that. Then you have someone literally summoning a demon, and defeating her and the demon took less time than climbing down the cliffs to find the last direwolf. It felt rushed and too easy. I wish they struggled more, they just got help every step of the way. There was no internal struggle for either of them even though there was so much potential. I could forgive the introduction of sight and demons but not the blind acceptance of it from Will and Maddie.
The biggest conflict was when the jug didn’t break the first time for Maddie. “The continual anticlimaxes sapped their reserves of energy” yeah, that is pretty much how I feel too. I felt no excitement or wonder for this book. Where was Will’s mind when they saw visions? Why would he believe stuff he saw in a fire after knowing Malcom? Why did Maddie just get drugged after having a nightmare and then didn’t struggle in the battle with her fear? Why didn’t Will have a moment of doubt when the demon offered him anything? Why wouldn’t he think of Alice this entire book with talk of demons and necromancy? This feels like a poorly written fanfic that doesn’t fit into the rest of the Ranger’s Apprentice world.
