Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield

This was so well written and narrated. I loved that when a character’s perspective was voiced that it was so throughly in character to show their state of mind, for example the photographer often thought about life in terms of exposure and dark room processes. The emotions were so relatable that I full on wept as I listened to one chapter on my drive home.

I wouldn’t say this was a sad book, but I thought it was going to be at the beginning and didn’t on if I could stomach the sadness. There is some element of fantasy in the story, but it plays a very minor role.

Okay, light warning: the author touches on topics of death, suicide, sex, and rape. I don’t want to turn anyone off, in writing that, because these topics are not a focus of the book. While it was a small surprise in listening to each of those moments, each topic is described delicately. For me, I felt the tension of knowing what was coming, without the full feeling of what could have been a more descriptive scene.
