What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
4.0

So. This was a weird one for me. Originally as I was finishing up this book, it was a 3.5, but that ending was INTENSE. I literally looked at my husband and yelled at him like it was his fault that the LAST PAGE OF THE BOOK ENDED LIKE THAT. WHAT THE HECK?!

So yeah. With that crazy ending, it was bumped up to a 4. I'm still in shock a day later. I don't know what's up and what's down. I need assistance IMMEDIATELY.

Now that that's out of the way, here's the more nitty-gritty review. There's a lot of good and a lot of not-so-good in this book. It was an incredibly slow start. I would say almost nothing happened for a solid 60% of the book. I think marketing was a huge issue with this because it said it's "The Mummy meets Death on the Nile" and I believe the "Death on the Nile" part, but it is no "The Mummy." This was not an action-packed romp through Egypt. I was expecting more action, more just things in general happening. Instead it was mostly a depressing inner monologue by the highly unlikable main character, Inez. I wanted to push her over the side of the boat on more than one occasion. Her entire personality was "missing parents" and "hot boy." I'm hoping that Inez has major character development in the second book and stops doing everything in her power to choose every single wrong decision available.

For the good, Whit. I absolutely loved Whit as a character. I also loved the complicated relationship between Inez and her uncle. I also loved talking about the complicated politics surrounding Egypt and how many tombs were basically raided and sold off. This is still a MAJOR issue in many countries that is just brushed under the rug. The scenery was beautiful and unique compared to a lot of the books I've read. I also loved everything in the last 40% of the book. There was action, drama, tense-situations, romantic interludes. Literally everything and it was such a good way to end the book.

So yeah. My brain hurts a little after reading this one, but I'm really excited to see what the second book has in store and I have very high expectations.
