Blood in the Water
by Tiffany D. Jackson
This is probably closer to a 4.25/4.5 but that's because it was kind of quick and a little predictable/repetitive. However, that is not unexpected in a middle grade thriller. And I think Jackson's writing is such that, even when listening to a pretty simple thriller, I was still totally engrossed.
The grandmother being responsible for Chadwick's death and Kaylani's dad's imprisonment was both surprising and not at all lol. She seemed so sketchy the whole time and once we were hearing about her knowing the owner of the house and being reminded that she got Kaylani's dad the job...it all fell into place.
There were a lot of characters that I had some trouble keeping track of but I just had a really great time. Jackson is able to write compelling mysteries while also weaving in important discussions - in this case we had talk of imprisonment and also code switching and discrimination among one's own race (The Watsons considered themselves the "right kind of Black people" while other folks on the island were beneath them).
It was just another great book from Jackson and I can't wait for her next YA thriller.
