Elise Benton and her sisters have just moved to a new private school in LA where most kids look like they've just stepped off of a runway and many of the kids' parents are celebrities. Immediately her older sister, who she is usually joined at the hip with, finds a guy that she is interested in. While sitting at lunch with them, his friend Derek joins, and Elise learns that he is the son of two very famous movie stars. Right away she is turned off by how standoffish and rude he seems, but she also can't seem to get him out of her head. Epic Fail is a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's very popular Pride and Prejudice.
I have a weakness for anything Pride and Prejudice or Jane Austen, so I absolutely loved this book. I thought LaZebnik did a great job at taking the classic story and making it fit our contemporary times without seeming like she was just throwing in culture references for that sake. All of the characters seemed quite true to the classic P&P characters that they were based off of. I started the book around 8 pm and had it finished by midnight that night.
I would recommend this book to most any middle or high school student. The book covers teen romance, but keeps it at a good PG and doesn't go far. I think any young girl would enjoy this story, and it would be a great way to steer them into reading Jane Austen's classic if you have found that they enjoyed it.
