The Flanders Panel
by Arturo Pérez-Reverte
I’m a fan! I love mysteries, especially smart mysteries. And as an amateur chess player, I especially liked this mystery novel where the game of chess was the centerpiece. We find out who “killed the knight” pretty early on in the book. And just when you think the game of chess is no longer relevant, the game continues and I was fascinated by how it played out.
The way Arturo writes is very poetic. The imagery, the metaphors, and the details were all amazing. My only critique (which is a critique I have for many mystery novels) is that once the culprit is identified, the pages that followed to describe the individual’s motive were long and laborious. It was hard to read after the mystery had already revealed itself, and I wished the explanation hadn’t gone on so many tangents. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I liked the care and intelligence used by the author to craft such a fascinating story.
