Starts off slow and old-fashioned, but gets much better towards the end. I read it foremost because of Marx's praises, and it is an interesting snapshot of French society--obviously not a documentary, but illuminating nevertheless. Very dramatic and the title character reminded me of Dostoyevsky's the Idiot at times.
