Spoops: The Little Spirits of Halloween by A.J. Locascio
5.0
This book warmed me like a cup of tea on a chilly autumn morning. It was charming and enchanting. There is a nostalgic element to the story with the rhyming and the illustrations. Both the writing and the art style reminded me of books I read as a child. They both have a very classic and vintage feel. The black and white art with pops of orange lend itself to the Halloween atmosphere, which also maintaining the nostalgic feeling. I thought it was brilliant. The concept of the Halloween spirits, the spoops, is adorable. I loved every single one. I think this could easily become a children’s classic. Spoops very much sound like an old folklore tale told to children. This would be a fantastic book to read to a class around Halloween. I could easily see an assignment where the students make their own spoops. I loved this so much. I will be purchasing my own copy upon release and recommending to everyone I know. The spoops are the perfect fairy godmothers for all those with a love for Halloween. If you relate to Marnie from Halloweentown, you’ll love this. The main character is very much a little Marnie.
