The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

3.0

I wish I had read this instead of listening to the audiobook.
Primarily because I think it would have been easier for me to track the mother/daughter pairs. I was continually lost, not knowing which story was tied to which character(s).
Second, it would have eliminated some of the irritating distractions with the narration - hiccups with repeated lines, awkward intonation, incorrect pronunciation and confusion caused by inconsistent accents/character voices. No hate to the narrator - she did a lovely job - this was a big endeavor, with a LOT of different voices to cover, it was just distracting for me. And no one pronounces "granite" gra-NIGHT. Whoever edited/produced this should have fixed a few things.

As far as the book itself, it's lovely. And it touches on a theme I've been thinking about lately - how we don't really know our relatives as whole people, outside of the context of our own selves, until it's awfully late. Bittersweet.

I didn't 5-star love this book, but it comes down to personal preference and my experience with the audiobook. I am glad I finally read it. It is an undeniably lovely exploration of interplay between mothers and daughters and between cultures.
