A Dawn with the Wolf Knight by Elise Kova
5.0
This series of books makes me so happy. Picking up a book knowing that it’s (technically) a stand-alone story with a happily ever after while still having the immersive world building of a series has been great for my mental health. Plus they’re all gorgeous! I can’t wait for my edition of this one to come in to join the rest of the pretties on my shelf.
A Dawn with the Wolf Knight centers around Faelyn, the last surviving witch who partners with spirits and helps maintain the protective barriers between the forest and the human lands. One day while visiting a sacred site in the forest, she encounters a woman being chased by wolves who appears to perform some sort of magic that impacts Faelyn. Faelyn helps her escape to the human lands and discovers that the woman, Aurora, is actually a spirit as well who is escaping many lifetimes of captivity by the wolf kings. The magic she performed was an attempt to reclaim her power from where half of it has been trapped in a ring that kept her bound to the lykin who possessed it. However, when she attempted it, the trapped power entered Faelyn, so Faelyn vows to help Aurora regain her full power and escape the lykin for good. Unfortunately, the wolves return and capture Aurora which leads to a rescue attempt that results in Faelyn being taken captive as well by the two lykin sent to reclaim Aurora - Evander and Bardulf.
Faelyn is seriously one of the kindest characters I’ve read - she treats the spirits with such respect and is genuinely good. Her friendships with Aurora and the other spirits are sweet and I enjoyed the additional world building around the spirits and magic of Midscape. Watching her relationship with Evander develop and grow was sweet. I did guess at some of the twists and turns the story took, but it was still a delightful ride.
I received and reviewed an ARC; this did not impact my review and all thoughts are my own.
