I've never read anything from this author, and from what I understand, this is not her normal genre. Despite that, I really enjoyed this. The characters, Kai especially, felt like real people. I cared about their struggles - in both the present and past story lines being told in parallel. Also, the magic systems in this book are interesting and complex, and I'm hoping to see them explored more in the next book!
