Mae Van Dorn's Perfect Storm
by Sheila Athens
lighthearted
reflective
fast-paced
The title really paints a great picture for the story inside!
Mae was fired from her job through a disastrous aired grievance about a large donor and in order to find work where her old boss (hopefully) can't influence, she ends up hours away with her half brother. There she gets a job working for a minister of a megachurch who may not be in the up and up. She meets a man she could fall for and a Cat 5 hurricane to contend with.
I liked the magical realism where Mae Van can tell if a person has bad intentions because she sees a silver haze around their face. I loved that most people in this book helped Mae restore her faith in humanity. The ending scene where she openly defies her boss at the church during the hurricane *chef's kiss* I really loved this scene. Mae is such an amazing character.
