cthib9 's review for:
In Dubious Battle
by John Steinbeck
I've mentioned Steinbeck's penchant for novelistic journalism in previous reviews, and this is yet another masterclass of historical fiction. Delving into the hearts and minds of apple pickers in the 1930s, this book chronicles a group of workers who mobilize into a vigorous strike on the land owners.
Steinbeck was able to tap into some truly profound notions on the plight of such endeavors while sustaining the strike's worthwhile effects. The men who chose not to pick were not only fighting for fair wages - they were fighting for their dignity and purpose as men. The means in which these men protested are not as relevant in 2019 as their reasons for doing so.
Incredibly dense and full of gritty and gruesome accounts, this is not a typical Steinbeck tome. But it is a crucial one nonetheless that features timeless struggles.
