A Psalm of Storms and Silence by Roseanne A. Brown

4.0

A Psalm of Storms and Silence continues a visual story rich with West African folklore and magic. The storyline becomes darker and sinister as it progresses, and the paced reveal of ancestral history is intriguing. Character arcs are well written: the princess shines with her developing powers and with the sacrifices she makes for her people, while the second protagonist's spiral before his eventual healing is heartbreaking. Even with the supporting characters, the dynamics of their individual stories parallel the larger social issues in the book. With the exception of one relationship that would have been nicer to see more concretely on the pages, Brown spends time resolving the story in this captivating fantasy duology.
