Darkhouse by Karina Halle
3.0

This was a fun, quick read that I recommend for anyone who enjoys paranormal horror and sexual tension.

The characters were fun and had a detailed history that Halle did not fully reveal or explain which leaves you wanting to know more. This was an excellently crafted introductory book in a hero's journey with two protagonists who have to figure out their destiny/life's mission. Albeit, some of the dialogue with the clown lady and Perry's sister was cheesy, but it was still enjoyable.

My favorite part of this novel has to be the sexual tension laid throughout. Halle does not give the reader the immediate satisfaction of having the two characters who should so obviously be together. I love this format and it builds foundation for the rest of the series. Most importantly, it gives a believable history and foundation for a potential relationship between the main characters. It makes us, as the reader, root for them.

However, there are some discrepancies that brought me out of the novel. For example, the fact that the characters had to pump their own gas was an error caused by faulty research. In Oregon, they have people to pump your own gas and even offer to get you coffee or hot cocoa (which you pay for of course). I'd even go so far and say it was illegal to pump your own gas because of worker unions. It was little details like that sprinkled throughout the book, that would pull me out of it because I have been around the area which could have been solved with location research that bugged me.

I haven't been so tempted to buy a paranormal romance series in a while, so thank you Halle.
