For me, reading only books like Legends & Lattes would feel like a diet consisting solely of marzipan and meringue. But as a treat, this kind of low-stakes fantasy that focuses on the mundane daily lives of fairly normal people is a tasty and relaxing read. I wouldn’t say it’s entirely free of conflict: there are some challenges and obstacles, both internal and external. But they’re wrapped up pretty easily and neatly. It’s a fun contrast from the usual high drama of high fantasy. (My only problem with it is that I don’t like coffee at all, so the loving paeans to its glory left me cold. Now, the cinnamon rolls…)
