So an Ukrainian man and an American woman are texting:

Nvrmnd.

Never mind?

I’m not meeting u, however nice, at yr apt.

So you think I am nice? I am pleased.

Guess who’s the Ukrainian and who’s the American? You probably guessed wrong or maybe not.

I loved Daisy and Nikolai and I was sure “Last breath” would be a follow-up of their story and I’m a little disappointed now that I’ve found out it’s not
Spoilereven if I do want to know what happened to Regan and Daniel
. I want more of them and even though I realize there was nothing more to add to the plot (especially after “Last Gift”) I would have been happy just reading about their everyday life and routine.

So the first chapter or two are told from Daisy’s POV, and the chapter after that is told from Nikolai’s POV and he’s spying on Daisy and her roommate from his window across the street, and he’s aware her roommate is sexually dissatisfied with her boyfriend and he says: "A man who goes to sleep without satisfying his woman deserves punishment. He sleeps through her self-pleasure? Death is too kind." That cracked me up! I mean, that was a low blow, how can you not like him after something like that? Especially after knowing that that was something which came from a man whose only physical interactions were with prostitutes. From the first line I knew I’d love Nikolai to death (pun intended), he was so completely clueless and naïve when it came to relationships, when it was Daisy the one who was supposed to be the innocent, unaware flower, and well, she was, but he was even more clueless than her. It was a pure delight seeing the early interactions between these two. At some point, he’s so desperate about how badly things are going between them that he quotes a line from a pimp he had known previously, remembering how pleased the prostitutes were when he would say that to them, hoping that this line will work with Daisy too.

When he thinks about what to do to please Daisy and make her like him he says: "It is different work than I've done in the past. The ending steps must conclude with her liking me instead of her dead on the floor." (This was probably my favorite line from the book). I mean, how can you resist a character like that?

Now all I hope is that “Last Breath” will be just as good.
