aftg fans…. are you guys ok? do you need a hug? therapy maybe? because Oh Boy this series seems like it’s gonna be a trip if they are even remotely similar to this first book.
this book has so much goddamn wrong with it. but in an almost charming way. ok not charming. but like you kinda just read most of it and smile saying “yeah buddy you really tried there ☺️” like you would to a little kid kicking a ball and missing the goal by a few kilometres. like yeah there was an attempt here. and i’m proud of you. Mostly.
i gotta get this off my chest. i’ve seen people on twt for eons talking about a possible sexual assault in this book, and arguing about it all day and night. and i completely forgot about all those arguments. Until I Got To That Point. Hey, Nora Sakavic, What The Fuck? that entire chapter can be summed up into: Why. Literally Why. why are you redeeming these awful people. why the fuck are their actions excused. Hello? and then oh of COURSE we’ll make only one gay character the guy who is implied (or it doesn’t actually happen? i couldn’t tell) to sexually assault a straight guy who had turned down his advances numerous times. great implication there! and on that topic Oh How I Hate The Way Gay People Are Portrayed Here. nasty nasty work. and seriously cmon why was the f-slur used. really. yeah ok we’re painting seth as a shit person DO THAT IN OTHER WAYS WITHOUT HIM BEING HOMOPHOBIC OH MY GOD!!!!! and why the fuck is the coach obsessed with the r-slur. Excuse Me? and i don’t want to hear “oh it was written in a different time” SHUT UP. that excuse only works if ur shit was written before electricity was fucking invented. Nononononononono. and my god…. this book isn’t written amazingly. the first chapters have seriously The Worst introduction of main characters i’ve ever seen. why are you throwing this many people at me. GIVE ME TIME TO ADJUST!!! and then oh of courseeee neil is a fucking mary sue. and so is kevin and riko. oh yeah they just happen to run the mafia and also randomly a sport invented solely in this book universe and they’re also celebrities as  well. sure whilst we’re at it why not give kevin and riko a backstory where they were in a boy band. or that they won america’s got talent. Woof. and the dialogue…. it’s so stilted. the way information about the universe is given to readers is clunky as hell. so much of this reads like a fan fiction. what the fuck is going on.
so why oh why am i not giving this a 1-star, and why the fuck am i continuing this series. i gotta be real i need to know why twitter is so obsessed with this series. i have slim hope that this shit gets better. i mean sakavic is still writing the series… surely her most recent book doesn’t at least have all the clunky writing! right…. sweats nervously. also i gotta be honest…. i actually liked neil as an mc. and i liked andrew by the end… as well as their dynamic. andrew can still eat shit for his role in the drugging of neil but like… idk i get why people ship them. i hope they become best boyfriends. and i’m also lowkey invested in seeing neil’s history get revealed, as well as seeing more encounters with riko. i gotta say tho he seems like a cartoon villain. like he has to be the most blatant caricature of a villain i’ve encountered in a book.
i fear aftg twitter will see this. i fear i will be chewed up and spat out and then publicly shamed for dunking on this book. but honestly it’s kinda like twilight for me. it’s so bad reading it becomes enjoyable as you find more shit to complain about, and along the way you find small sprinklings of Joy and Whimsy and Positive Things. and you know what? i’m a glutton for punishment
