You know, I’m coming to the realization that if it takes me almost a year to finish the first book of a fantasy series, it’s more likely than not going to be a 5-star read.

Because this is not the first time this has happened, but the emotional rollercoaster that comes with me wholeheartedly enjoying a story on a sub-molecular level is very closely tied to me either being on the brink of having a panic attack or a heart attack multiple times throughout my reading experience so that I physically have to put the book down and distance myself in order to be able to proceed with the story.

I squealed too many times while reading this - we’re talking full blown hand gestures, me tossing the hardcover on the floor in awe of the manipulation tactics within one moment and delicately placing the volume down and open to where I have paused to quickly void my bladder and then pick things right back up.

The world is immersive, the magic system still such a mystery but I am totally enamoured with, the characters are so worthy of your time to follow on their journey - Diago (x2) especially and obviously but let it be said that I never liked Emissa in the first place, Callidus made my heart shatter, Eidhin made my heart swell and Aequa is a BAMF and we STAN - and the political manipulations and maneuvering is just phenomenal. Top tier, had me gasping aloud too many times to count alongside the writing which did not let up.

The series is one of less than a handful that I can wholeheartedly say that I am following, pre-ordering and committing to, and you know it’s real when the maps are the only thing that I have gripes about and yet am still dropping all of the stars towards anyways.

I can’t be eloquent about why this has the capability to become one of my favourite fantasy series ever, just read it.

And inject the sequel straight into my veins because I CANNOT WAIT FOR IT.
