The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson

5.0

Just finished reading this amazing book. I was constantly sitting in awe after reading a chapter thinking, 'How did this incredible man create this story?'.

There was so much to this story, so many twists and turns, I don't know if I can say I know a lot more about how North Korea works, as I think that was a very stylised, fictional story to follow, that I cannot for sure say that any of these types of things would ever happen.

The idea behind someone being able to just say they are a certain person, and everyone else just has to agree with it, is bonkers, and terrifying. Is this something that happens over there??? If that person wasn't really liked, and they were high in power, can this type of thing happen?

It was a very easy read, I had never heard of this book, or of the author, so am interested to see if there are any other books by Adam Johnson, as I would love to read something else that he has created in his head.

I sometimes felt that some stories were brought up, had a lot of excitement and suspense surrounding them and then they just had to be stopped and forgotten to make way for another crazy twist.

At some points, I was a bit tired of the constant "Woah! And then this happened! Woah!" but in the end, it brought everything to an end, which I thought was the best way of ending the book.

Give it a go! Very easy read, and very interesting insight into another culture (albeit maybe a fairly fictional idea).
