Through to You by Lauren Barnholdt

4.0

*I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review*
I’m not sure what I was expecting in Through To You but it certainly wasn’t what I got. I was expecting this to another regular teenage bad boy meets good girl, and immediately changes everything. That’s not really what this book was about.

Penn has already lost everything he cared about when he truly meets Harper for the first time. Harper also isn’t going to give up her dreams just because Penn is hot and broody. I liked that Harper seemed just like a normal girl, she occasionally skipped class but not enough to cause problems, and she had a dream that she pursued even when it seemed like her relationship with Penn might try to derail her from that. I only say that because a break up in every other young adult book seems to leave the female character crying buckets and forsaking the world. Not here.

Harper was strong, she had emotions and she did end up crying, but it didn’t cause her to give up on life. In fact what made this book so great is that there were many times that Harper stood up for herself, and in the end that’s what she did. I also liked that Penn had to realize that he was being unfair not only to Harper, but himself and even his other friends.

I think what I liked the most about this book was the situations were all very realistic. There were some cliches but it seemed like they were in the background. The exchanges between Harper and Penn felt real. It was also nice because I didn’t notice any of the typical things thrown in just to add extra drama.

Lauren Barnholdt did a great job writing this book and making the characters seem real and believable. I would give the book 4 out of 5 stars, it was a great young adult read and I highly recommend it for those who like teenage romance.
