Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson

4.0

I'm not sure how I feel about this book. On one hand, I really enjoyed reading it; I liked the writing style and was utterly gripped by the story (as is obvious given that I read it in a day). In particular the author creates very vivid characters, and the tone of childhood innocence is very well done. On the other hand, whilst the fable-like passages initially seemed profound, by the end of the book they felt tiresome and pretentious, so I got pretty fed up with them. I also found the abrupt ending a bit disconcerting, but I suppose that was the desired effect.

If nothing else, this book was thought-provoking and I expect to be puzzling out what I think about it for a while.
