The fantasy genre is my bread and butter. I love it, I lap it up all year round. It's my comfort genre. I'm not picky with it. I will eat Wonderbread and margarine. But every now and then I get a taste of a homemade pain au levain with butter made from grass-fed, massaged cows in New Zealand and I am wowed. That's how it feels when I read a fantasy book with nuanced politics, imperfect and morally grey characters, high stakes, a good magic system, and thoughtful world-building. This is The Witcher series for me. Sapkowski is an excellent storyteller and seamlessly transitions from POV to POV, showing but not telling. A fantasy series with actual nail-biting action, AND humor that makes me laugh out loud, AND character development. Chef's kiss
