American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
5.0

This is so much more than a book about a drug cartel and its devastating impact on the Perez family, and the world. This is also a story about a moms unconditional love for her son! Lydia flees Alcupolco after she witnesses 16 family members being murdered and we follow her and her son on their courageous fight to protect themselves and try to build a new life that they deserve.

I’m giving this story a 5 because it was gripping, emotional and was all in all a great fictitious book...And that’s all this is: fiction. Do I think Jeanine Cummins accurately portrayed the plight of migrants? Absolutely not. If you don’t walk in their shoes you can’t even begin to understand. However, by researching and writing a work of fiction on the subject she’s at least trying to learn and bring awareness!
