The King in Yellow
by Robert W. Chambers
I checked this out because I heard it was an influence on HP Lovecraft (and therefore Stephen King) and cosmic horror. You can totally see the beginnings of the subgenre.
Also remembering season 1 of True Detective has always made me curious about this book. The first half are loosely connected short stories with the fictional book The King in Yellow and the fictional place Carcosa playing a central role.
The 2nd half is more of a collection of later 19th century romance stories. Even listening at 1.5 speed audio, it still felt like it took too long.
