In Watermelon Sugar
by Richard Brautigan
"I guess you are kind of curious as to who I am, but I am one of those who do not have a regular name. My name depends on you. Just call me whatever is in your mind."
My first Brautigan did not disappoint. One of the strangest, most wonderful books I've ever read. Surreal, haunting, sad, sweet, dark, and lovely. The world in which the story takes place feels so contemporary and yet the novel is relatively old - a testament to its timelessness. Brautigan is a born poet who tries his hand at post-apocalyptic (presumably) prose and it just really, really worked for me. I typically like straightforward stories that require little interpretation but this novel has shown me the power that comes with the freedom to create your own context and fill in the blanks yourself. A relatively short read and one that had me unpacking the meaning of "watermelon sugar" for days. One of my favorite reads of 2019!
