This is the story of two best friends in 1950s Italy, as they go from girlhood to womanhood. Slow in the beginning as it delves into their childhoods through fragmented stories, it really flourishes as they get older. When I finished this I was left feeling a bit bereft at the idea of no longer being in the world of Lenu and Lila, so I borrowed the sequel from Libby immediately.
