Frontier by Can Xue

challenging mysterious slow-paced
A singular and fascinating novel that demands attention. Where are we? When are we? How many characters are there actually? What's with all the animals anyway?! There's clearly some sort of logic at work, yet its slipperiness is also strangely part of the appeal - call it perplexed delight. I'll definitely circle back to reread this, with the aspiration of perhaps one day understanding just what the hell is going on. That I managed to enjoy the hell out of this while often befuddled is some sort of testament to Can Xue's craft.
