Stepsister
by Jennifer Donnelly
“History books say that kings and dukes and generals start wars. Don't believe it. We start them, you and I. Every time we turn away, keep quiet, stay out of it, behave ourselves.”
Stepsister is a solid Cinderella sequel where we follow her “ugly” stepsister, Isabelle, right after Cinderella’s happily ever after. This book tackles how emotional abuse and societal expectations shaped the stepsisters, especially Isabelle, and explains why they act the way they do.
Overall, I adored this solid, grimy, dark tale a lot! I fell in love with the atmospheric, lyrical, poetic writing style and stayed for the overall message:
“There is magic in this sad, hard world. A magic stronger than fate, stronger than chance. And it is seen in the unlikeliest of places… It is the magic of a frail and fallible creature, one capable of both unspeakable cruelty and immense kindness. It lives inside every human being ready to redeem us. To transform us. To save us. If we can only find the courage to listen to it.
It is the magic of the human heart.”
