The Graveyard Book: Volume 1 by P. Craig Russell, Neil Gaiman
1.0

I read "The Graveyard Book" when it was first published and enjoyed it immensely. I had already decided to re-read this and a lovely young lady in my public library suggested the graphic novel instead. Excellent idea! Yeah... That is until I saw the artwork. Well now...

I have serious issues with P. Craig Russell and his interpretation of Scarlet. In the original, Gaiman clearly describes Scarlet as having "dark brown skin" and yet Russell felt the need to not only make Scarlet mixed race, but he gave her perfectly straight hair (yeah, 'cause mixed race people never have curly, kinky or coarse hair). I. Am. Pissed. Your graphic style is your graphic style, but to change someone's race/colour/whatever-the-fuck-you-to-call-it, is simply not on, not to mention more than a little racist. How was the Scarlet's character enhanced by making this change?! It absolutely ruined the graphic novel for me, as did Kevin Nowlan's pedantic interpretation of Silas (but not nearly to the same degree as Russell's overt and ridiculously unnecessary change).

Shame on Russell and on Neil Gaiman for allowing it.
