Keris Bradford is a woman on the brink...Of what? She doesn't quite know. Her life is shifting, rapidly, and the sudden, captivating intrusion of Laken Kimble isn't exactly... reassuring. For Keris, Laken is comfort and risk wrapped in one very appealing package. For Laken, Keris is barrier and providence all at once. For both, there arises a need to navigate those contrasts to a conclusion neither was looking for... a need to answer a simple question. If you want this... what are you willing to offer in exchange?

Review:

“Equivalent exchange. If you want something… you have to give something else up.” -Laken Kimble

In this book, we follow Keris Bradford, a 30-something, talented graphic designer who finds herself at the Night Shift Brewery and Bar nursing a break-up with the help of alcohol when she meets the owner, Laken Kimble of Kimble Distillery and Kimble Family Bourbon. They both...hit if off instantly, ending in a intense night that Laken tried to forget and Laken swore was destiny. When Night Shift Brewery and Bar was in dire need of a graphic designer to take their business to the next level for a recent beer project, Keris is hired for the job, solely because she was a gifted designer. With their recent...exchange, they find it quite difficult to separate work life from their personal life. Their journey to figuring out what they both require from one another, ensuring that both of their needs are met due to their complicated pasts, is quite enjoyable. And...steamy, Chile!

What I LOVE about CCJ is her ability to write such well developed characters in such realistic ways. Who her characters are, where they live, play, and work...it all feels so tangible. They feel like the homies, quite honestly, and I find it easy to become enthralled with her books. She also takes such real issues such as in this book with divorce, domestic violence, mental health issues, and loss, and she handles it so delicately, allowing her characters to come out victorious on the other side of such hurt and pain. We LIVE for a happily ever after!

It may go without saying, but this book was most definitely a 5 star read for me! While reading this one, grab yourself a chilled glass of whiskey or a beer, just as you would while sitting at your favorite table at The Night Shift Brewery and Bar and just...enjoy the ride, as it is indeed just that!
