This was a great read! It’s darker, more cynical and a lot more interesting than the preceding book by Rizal. Simoun feels like a villainous Count of Monte Cristo, but despite him being the protagonist a lot of the side characters shine especially in this. Simoun almost takes a backseat in favour of the social whole in this story. I was left a bit unsatisfied with the climax, or rather lack thereof, but the more I think about it, the more it fits the story. The only thing I didn’t like was the last chapter with Simoun and the priest. It felt like the author was going back on a lot of the revolutionary statements and ideas he proposed in the rest of the book.
