In terms of writing quality, this should probably get 3 stars, but I just have to bump it up to 4 stars for the nostalgia factor. It was so fun to jump back into the Divergent series, which was undoubtedly one of my favorites as a teenager.

Roth presents four short stories and three vignettes about Four’s choosing, his dauntless initiation, his alienation from dauntless leadership, becoming an initiation instructor and meeting Tris, the first jumper scene, the cafeteria scene, and the “you look good” scene. It was so fun to read these from Four’s POV, but they wouldn’t make sense without the context of the original three books.

My favorite thing about this collection of short stories was that it gave such brilliant insight into Four’s internal conflict over his old and chosen factions. Reading the original books many years ago, I was under the impression that he was always meant to be dauntless even though he was divergent. Roth does a really nice job showing how Four really didn’t fit in there and how Tris was a breath of fresh air for him. It makes more sense why he fell in love with her, and her with him.

Again, such a nostalgic read. I’d recommend to anyone who enjoyed the original trilogy.
