Real Life by Brandon Taylor

5.0

I’m kind of exhausted by how many great books I’ve been reading lately. Brandon Taylor’s writing style is very reminiscent of Hanya Yanagihara’s, in that it cuts deep and exposes truths that neither the reader nor the characters particularly want to have to face. What was, I think, so unique about the character of Wallace, was his difficulty in prying apart his personal flaws from the injustices he faced in the world around him. What made him so raw was his uncertainty in navigating a world in which he was an individual, whole human being, but was categorized before that could be expressed, and thus chose not to express himself at all.
