Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World by Keiichi Sigsawa

4.0

I really loved Kino's Journey, especially the character of Kino, when I watched it several years ago. Krystl got me this book for my birthday, which is one of the "novels" the anime is based on. I put novel in quotes because it's really a collection of connected short stories about Kino's travels, with each one focusing on a particular "country" (which are really more like cities) that Kino visits.

It had been long enough since I watched the anime that I didn't remember the "twists" in most of the stories, and getting to them definitely keeps you reading. Keiichi does a great job of laying down strange, unrelated clues that keep you guessing about the stories crux until the very end. Each vignette also seems to contain a bit of commentary about the human condition, or the extent to which "human nature" can cause the world to go completely awry. I really didn't care for the last story in the collection, which was a pity because it meant I finished on an "unimpressed" note, but all the rest of them were on target for me.
