brennanpeterson 's review for:
A Tale of Two Cities
by Charles Dickens
I really had a hard time appreciating this book for the first third. It was interesting, but I wondered why it was a classic. At the half way point, that all changed.
Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton are now two of my favorite characters in any book. There is such a nobility to these men in the face of horrible circumstances. I hope I can emulate their characters in my life (well except for Carton's shame and self-loathing - something I thought was such a keen observation to add in a book in the 1800s. Dickens' ability to write about psychological trauma before anyone even knew what it was was also incredible.)
I was totally unprepared to feel dramatic tension in the book. I you would have told me there was dramatic tension I would have laughed.
It was frightening to hear about the insanity and anarchy of the French Revolution. The only word I can use to describe it is chilling. The book truly paints a terrifying portrait of the ferver of it all and of the lawlessness. I felt as if I was there.
It was such an interesting book. It is my first real foray into a true classic and I was unexpectedly rewarded.
