i’m so glad i decided to finally pick up this book, especially to close off indigenous history month and in light of recent events in canada. this novel is easy to read but tough to swallow. wagamese is such a talented writer, and manages to write with such an accessible simplistic style while still being profoundly beautiful.

i think everyone should read this novel - especially fellow canadians. it is our responsibility to educate ourselves on the horrors of our past, and the story of saul is such a heartbreaking but raw and true depiction of this history.

my heart breaks for all victims of residential schools. what a truly despicable thing to have ever happened here.
