The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

4.0

“She wasn’t interested in telling other people’s futures. She was interested in going out and finding her own.”

The Raven Boys follows a young girl named Blue Sargent who has known her entire life that she is to kill the one she truly loves, based on the foreseen prophecies of her psychic family. Upon meeting the four 'Raven Boys', she becomes caught up in a sinister world that contains magic, ghosts and ancient Welsh Kings.

I really loved this book! I went into it with a very basic outline of the content but I was thoroughly surprised by my enjoyment! I had high expectations before starting this and I was definitely not disappointed. I got what I expected and I'm really glad that I got around to picking it up!

The basic premise of this book was very vaguely explained to me and even after finishing it, the concept of it only loosely makes sense in my head. Due to my confusion, I ducked half a star, the other half ducked due to having a difficult time getting into it. Thinking back, this may have been because I started back at school and was so overwhelmed with my studies, but it also did have a very slow beginning. After it picked up though, I was hooked.

The different perspectives were written wonderfully and I loved getting to know the boys on a more personal level rather than just reading about them from Blue's POV. I think that all of the characters were really well developed and it was so nice falling in love with each character individually. They all had super great characteristics that played out so well. I also enjoyed the way Stiefvater used her writing skills to set the perfect atmosphere for when our characters went exploring. It made me feel as if I was really there on the adventure with them.

If all of the following books are as good as this, I know it'll make my favourite series list. I look forward to continuing with the rest of the series! (I also just really wish that my name was Blue).
