Cleat Cute by Meryl Wilsner

emotional funny hopeful

3.5

This was a cute story, but my favourite by Wilsner will (I think) always be Something to Talk About. I was less invested in the main romance in this one, and there were a few moments that struck me as odd.
At one point Grace schedules an ADHD assessment for Phoebe without her knowledge, which just felt really invasive and inconsiderate considering that some people don't actually want a diagnosis and Phoebe's opinion on the matter isn't 100% clear. There's also a scene where Grace jokes about not labeling herself as queer and Phoebe immediately assumes the only reason a lesbian wouldn't identify that way is because they're a terf and think queer is a slur. I understand that Wilsner wants to keep terfs away from their work, but the whole thing was very immersion-breaking.
I really enjoyed Grace's arc with her family though, that was really heartwarming. This was still a good book overall though, and I don't think most people would care about the things I found jarring.
