Firestar's Quest by Erin Hunter

5.0

Reread July/August ?? 2020 - September 29, 2020.

Ahh, so another one comes to an end. This one took me a while to get through, but I did really enjoy it. It was nice being back in Firestar's head again, I've missed him. For a first Super Edition, I think this one was a great start.

The first half or so of the book was quite slow, I will admit. I set it down for days and even weeks at a time because I just wasn't feeling it (though perhaps that may have something to do with the fact I've been reading too many Warriors books overall). But once we got to meet all the new SkyClan warriors? Yes please. I finished it in like two days after that.

I love all the characters, even though they're essentially copies of other character stereotypes that have already been used. I mean, it's hard to be original when it's a series with over 900 characters. I got serious Squirrelpaw vibes from Cherrypaw, and I loved it. Also, I love Leafdapple ;-;

I did find it interesting how quickly the Clan came together once the cats were found. It was nothing, nothing, nothing... and suddenly a whole Clan! Well, besides the medicine cat and leader. But they were pretty quick too. I loved Leafstar's leader ceremony, and was impressed that there managed to be nine cats who actually felt significant to give her her lives. I was a little sad that Rainfur wasn't one of them, but it is what it is. I forgot her mom was one of them, that was super sweet.

Also, is it ever explained why Rainfur has a warrior name?? If it is, I missed it. He doesn't seem to know anything about the Clans and is just a rogue, but then Firestar just "confirms" his name instead of giving him a new one. It's never mentioned either, like "oh you have a warrior name" except for that one instance. Kinda weird if you ask me.

One thing I didn't like was the whole Spottedleaf-Sandstorm conflict. Like, Spottedleaf is literally dead, she's not gonna steal your man. Also she's a nun, so they couldn't have smooched anyway. It just felt very unnecessarily dramatic to me when FireSand is such an obvious power couple. But I've never liked FireSpotted, so.

New dad Firestar was also suuuuper precious. I can just imagine him being so worried and fawning over them and Sandstorm. And baby Squirrelkit and Leafkit getting into all sorts of shenanigans..... Ah, the peaceful days before the New Prophecy arc.

Overall, I think it was pretty solid despite some bumpiness in the pacing and things like that. I fell in love with the SkyClan cats and wish we could see more of them sooner, but alas it'll be a good 20 books or so before I get to SkyClan's Destiny. God, this series is so long. Anyway, we're back to the main series with the next installment, so that'll be fun! Onward to Dark River~
