Very Sincerely Yours by Kerry Winfrey

3.0

Thoughts: I became a fan of Kerry Winfrey's work when I read her first book, [b:Waiting for Tom Hanks|40969415|Waiting for Tom Hanks (Waiting for Tom Hanks, #1)|Kerry Winfrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1544730803l/40969415._SX50_.jpg|63916403], so I was excited to have the opportunity to read her latest, Very Sincerely Yours. This book isn't tied into Winfrey's first two books, so don't worry if you haven't read those before diving into this one. VSY centers around Teddy, a young woman figuring out her life after her dermatologist boyfriend breaks up with her. After spending years doting on him and letting others dictate her life, Teddy finds herself lost without any sense of direction and with no idea on how to make decisions for herself. Thankfully, she has two amazing best friends to help her along, as well as her TV crush, Everett St. James. Everett is a successful TV show actor and creator, hosting his own children's puppet program on the local network. On TV, he's patient, kind, and big-hearted, so on a whim Teddy decides to email him about her problems. And so begins an adorable email relationship! But while some reviews have compared this story to the movie You've Got Mail, this is where the similarities end. There's not much subterfuge here -- Everett and Teddy meet in person relatively early on, so the romantic tension is cut pretty soon. What stems from this, though, is a realistic look at how new relationships (even seemingly loving and "successful" ones) have to navigate life changes and self-discoveries. I honestly thought this story was really sweet and refreshing in its premise, but there were just some aspects that kept me from loving it. First, I didn't think it was as funny as [b:Waiting for Tom Hanks|40969415|Waiting for Tom Hanks (Waiting for Tom Hanks, #1)|Kerry Winfrey|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1544730803l/40969415._SX50_.jpg|63916403]. Second, I felt like Teddy's two best friends almost overshadowed her in the book -- they were so likable and funny, providing the perfect comedic touch, and it left Teddy looking even more bland in my opinion. Lastly, there was an interesting side plot with Teddy's relationship to her sister that I wished had been explored a bit more, at least on the resolution side of things. But I have to say that I absolutely loved the conflict scene between Everett and another male character -- it was truly an LOL moment and probably my favorite part of the entire book. VSY is worth the read, just not my favorite of Winfrey's work. But I do look forward to her next book!
