So Alex goes to Venice in search of information about his father and drags unwitting teacher and schoolfriend into the fringes of his world. When he gets told a convincing tale of the past his anger takes him over to the dark side (or is it?). I know some other people who have read this book don't think this is credible, but I think it is of a piece with Alex' age, his lack of a father and the feeling that he has been betrayed and let down in the past by MI6 - in other words the ground has been prepared in the previous books so maybe those readers were ones taking this as a stand alone. Who knows. Anyway, more dastardly plots, improbable escapes from near-death experiences and twists and turns meant it was rather difficult to put this down.
