Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain
by Charles R. Cross
HOW did I never review this?? I read it years ago, after several students read it. I kept asking them if they understood Cobain's music better after they'd read the book, and they could never give me a straight answer, so I read it, and then got a 'best of CD' and discovered, that yes, indeed, reading the book did bring a richness to listening to his music.
I would share this book by saying he and his uncle actually killed themselves twice. There were so many drugs in his system at the time of his death, they would have stopped his heart eventually.
He seemed to have so much going for him, but he had a history of clinical depression, drug abuse, and a horrible stomach ailment that conspired against him.
I despaired for his daughter...a sweet baby who was born to parents who were well-intentioned (you never doubted his love for his daughter) but incapable of being grownups.
An important book about an important artist
