The Last American Vampire by Seth Grahame-Smith

5.0

I thought the prequel to this work was the best vampire novel I'd ever read.

I thought I could never love a vampire novel.

I hadn't read this one yet.

Wow.

Henry Sturges, one of the first to the New World, outlived all of those around him. He's witnessed each of his loved ones lowered into their graves. He's seen death and caused his fair share. That is what it means to be cursed into vampirism. He's finally decided to speak. The world will know of the strife of Henry Sturges.

Seth-Grahame has a story-telling gift. Never so brilliantly has a vampire fable been interwoven intimately into our history so successfully. This book kept me enraptured, on the edge of my seat, and (especially in the end) squirming from the vivid and gruesome details. This novels predecessor was good and worthy of the hit movie, but this story leaves it in the dust.

The Last American Vampire will be a favorite that will stick with me a long time. These novels are highly recommended for lovers of history, regardless of your opinion on paranormal novels. I promise you, I understand feeling put off by such a story, but it lives up to its name.
