The Sword of Summer
by Rick Riordan
I loved this. Is it a middle grade/YA book? Absolutely. Is it amazing regardless? Yes. The representation for Muslims, Deaf and disabled people, homeless kids and more is so important and I loved it. I also love the characters and their interpersonal relationships. The friendship Sam, Magnus, Hearthstone, and Blitzen share is so sweet and strong. I can’t wait to see how they grow together. Mr. Riordan has never been afraid to kill the odd character or two (See: Bianca di Angelo, Bob the Titan), but if any of them die, I WILL cry. All my personal attachments aside, the writing was reminiscent of the way Percy Jackson or the Kane Chronicles were written, which is to say, well. I adore the mythology and the imperfect gods. In the other mythologies discussed in his other books, the gods are generally either evil or seemingly untouchable. I like that these gods, at least so far, aren’t really like that. Anyways, worth a read!
