Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates
4.0
"A true ZOMBIE would be mine forever. He would obey every command & whim. Saying: "Yes, Master" and "No, Master." He would kneel before me lifting his eyes to me saying, "I love you, Master. There is no one but you, Master.
Joyce Carol Oates - Zombie
The quick summary would be, that we are following a killer on his day to day life with the ultimate goal of being able to create his sexual slave using lobotomy, and even that might be a little spoiler-ish. A subject that has been addressed before but not to this extent. It is an enjoyable read that will make you sick to your stomach but not for the reasons you are thinking.
SPOILERS AHEAD
I did not find myself disturbed about the subject matter on this book, but about the way that Q_P_ seemed to go about his day to day life. Taking us from going to his therapist appointments, to his dentist appointments, talking about his daily job and what he does for his grandmother. Things that most rational people would do on a day to day basis. Intertwined with that are the thoughts of a disturbed desires, dreams and thoughts.
The prose was rough but this was by design. It is supposed to reflect that same mind. Written on a diary style, it helps you immerse yourself into this disturbed mind. And it works wonders, not only are you able to see what Q things the way he thinks it but the sole prose of it makes it difficult to find a rhythm, making for a tough and unnerving experience.
This is my first Oates book and while really enjoyed it, this was definitely not the right book for a first time reader. It can be very off putting due to the grammatical errors (on purpose) and the book structure and rhythm, but I cannot wait to read more by this amazing author.
