To Your Eternity, Volume 1 by Yoshitoki Oima

4.0

I've taken a broad and historical approach to the manga I've been picking up since last year and am pumped to finally be reading a current, ongoing series. I started to realize the older titles were hard to find because readership dwindled and series were either canceled (sometimes just the English translation) or fewer copies were made. This is such a bummer, so I want to focus on supporting new titles, artists, and publishers.

I was stressed trying to pick a few new titles to follow (there are so many!) but couldn't be happier with this choice. It's primarily focused on the subject of death, or eternity really, through a silent, immortal being that can change form, and the way it stumbles into a heartbreaking scenario that may change the fate of those involved. This might be too heavy if it wasn't delivered so thoughtfully here with a unique, supernatural spin on the subject and enjoyable characters. It would be a great fit for a high schooler just starting to get a little existential.

The artwork is a mix of realistic and cartoonish and there are a lot of lush backgrounds which seem to be an afterthought for a lot of new manga (just empty whitespace) but is one of the main reasons I will pick up a series.

I'm really gonna be mad at myself for reading these so quickly when I catch up to the current volumes but that's part of the fun!
