I have to say that this was my least favorite Sun Eater book. This and the previous book Kingdoms of Death were originally supposed to be one book but the publisher made the author split them apart. While I felt this split did not hurt the predecessor it very much hurts Ashes of man.

The general pacing just felt off. I mean all of these books are pretty slow burns but this one felt like the first book in the series where the line between interesting slow burn and boredom was crossed more often then I would like. Resulting in really not that much happening plot wise or stuff just feeling a little redundant. And yeah that just felt somewhat frustrating to read at times for a series I just enjoyed immensely so far.

Nevertheless this is still a good book. There is plenty of great characters moments and actually also a surprising amount of humor in a otherwise pretty dark story, the worldbuilding continues to be excellent and the last 25% were just simply great reading again with some epic and brutal moments.

Still this gets the lowest rating of any Sun Eater novel yet. But 4 stars obviously is still a very solid book.
