I hate everything about this.
I am a MASSIVE fan of the show, and I’d been warned about the comics, but I didn’t know exactly how bad it was until I read it.
The complete disrespect to both Katara and Zuko’s characters was heartbreaking to see. I cannot believe Aang literally agreed to kill his friend (with Katara’s encouragement, wth???) when he wouldn’t even kill Ozai in the show?
I think the idea of the comic was good, but executed horribly and disrespectfully. And I think it shows that Aang was wrong to let Ozai live, cause it forces Zuko to deal with the aftermath and be continuously tormented by his abuser. And it’s there in black in white in the comic.
Edit: I also want to add that Katara’s reason for switching sides was complete garbage. Before she explained, I was thinking ‘It’s because she sees innocent people trying to live their lives and this is a threat to them, so she thinks that they need to come up with another way’.
Nope.
She’s just thinking about how it will affect the hypothetical family she and her 13-year-old boyfriend will have.
Which is ironic considering how, in Legend of Korra, Aang’s mindset of the four nations staying separate (which we see in this comic) ultimately divides his children between his airbending child and him and his waterbending/non-bender child and his waterbending wife.
If you like the comics, by all means. But I just can’t believe how much they manage to ruin. I’m still an Avatar fan, but it’s sad that it’s only the OG show.
